Research Center (CGILE)
The Environmental and Coastal Integrated Management Research Center (CGILE) is a multi-disciplined research centre connected with the University of Lomé, Togo. The centres aim is to pioneer and conduct fundamental research into the coastal zone of Togo. Research areas include: hydrodynamics, pollution, socio-economy, geography, organization and activity (occupation) of the country, biological resources. The centre is the continuation of the Coastal Erosion project, which began in September 1995 and the centre was officially opened on 2nd February 2001.
The centre is divided into several areas: physical resources, GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and remote sensing, legal aspects, natural resources, analysis of the social and economic potential, the occupation and organization of the country, and the documentation and distribution of information.
The centre works in partnership with other scientific departments and laboratories of the University of Lomé and at the level of the public administration, notably ministerial departments involved in the management of the coast, in particular the Ministry of the Environment and Forest resources.
The Environmental and Coastal Integrated Management Research Centre participates in various regional research projects such ODINAFRICA II, which is a network of data exchange on the oceanographic environment. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Committee of Unesco that covers the area of the marine ecosystem of the Current of Guinea ONUDI-PNUE coordinates this project. The committee organises regular meetings at both the regional and international level on various topics such as oceanography, biodiversity conservation, pollution, and coastal management. The CGILE has hosted several of these meetings, which includes: A workshop with reports and perspectives on coastal erosion in the region, held in Lomé during the 11-15th December 1995; A regional workshop on standardising the methodology for data collection and coastal management, held in Lomé during 17-20th February 1998; A national workshop on the state of the coastal environment of Togo held in Togoville in January 1999, reviewed the report entitled "Environmental Profile of the coast of Togo".
The Environmental and Coastal Integrated Management Research Centre is also home to the National Oceanographic Centre whose task is to collect data on the marine and coastal environment from direct observation and to collate data and statistics from various other projects. The centre is equipped with a sedimentology laboratory and a station for collecting weather data.
The director of the centre is Prof. Adoté BLIVI.
